The wait is almost over and your first sportive is finally here! With warmer days ahead and winter gear packed away, we hope you’ve had plenty of chances to get out on the bike and build up your confidence. To help you make the most of the event, we’ve put together a last minute survival checklist, ensuring you’re fully prepared for a smooth and stress-free day on the open (or should I say, closed…) roads
Is your bike ready to roll?
It may seem obvious, but is your bike in top condition? If you haven’t had a recent service, now’s the time for a thorough check. Before you start, ensure your bike is clean and dry. Here’s what to look for:
- Electronic gears: Fully charged?
- Tyres: Properly inflated, in good condition, and free of cuts?
- Brakes: Operational, centrally aligned and with sufficient pad depth?
- Tubeless setup: Enough sealant inside?
- Bolts: Properly torqued, especially stem, handlebars and seat post?
- Race number: If it was posted to you, attach it before you leave—fumbling with zip ties last minute isn’t fun!
- Chain maintenance: Clean and lubricate accordingly—wet lube for rain, dry lube for sunshine. If you run a waxed chain, ensure it’s within its optimal performance window.
Know your route
Having a good grasp of your route will improve your experience. If you’ve picked an event based on its terrain—whether hilly or flat—familiarising yourself with key segments will help with pacing and fuelling strategies. Many sportives offer multiple route choices, so be mindful of your correct path. While signage is usually good, uploading the course to your GPS device via a .GPX file is a smart backup plan.
Where are you parking?
To reduce stress on the morning of the event, plan your parking in advance. For city based events, getting close to the start line may not be an option and some locations require pre booking. If standard car parks are full, apps that allow you to reserve private driveways can be a cost-effective alternative.
Also, beware of low car park entrances—many bikes have been written off before the ride even began due to misjudging roof-mounted setups!
Fuel your ride
What you eat before and during the event can make or break your performance.
- The night before: Stick to a well-balanced meal with complex carbs (whole grains, fruits, vegetables) and lean protein (chicken, fish, beans). There’s no need to overeat—just ensure you’ve had sufficient fuel.
- Event morning: Opt for slow-releasing, low-GI foods like porridge, granola with yogurt, wholegrain toast with scrambled eggs, or a fruit smoothie.
- During the ride: Eat regularly and stick to familiar foods to avoid stomach issues. Hydration is just as important—check out our blogs on carb loading and hydration for more tips.
Dress for the weather
Check the forecast before you travel. Most sportives happen in spring, meaning unpredictable weather is likely. Pack for all conditions—being prepared can mean the difference between an enjoyable ride and a miserable one. If it’s sunny, don’t forget sunscreen and lip balm!
Essential spares
Make sure your saddlebag is ready for the long day ahead. At a minimum, bring:
- 2x inner tubes
- Micro multi-tool
- CO2 pump and 2x canisters
- 2x plastic tyre levers
- Nitrile gloves (to keep hands clean and white bar tape pristine)
- ICE (In Case of Emergency) details on laminated paper
- A £20 note (for emergencies)
If driving to the event, bring a track pump and toolkit—last-minute issues can arise and you might be able to help another rider in need.
Finally… Enjoy it!
Ride smart, ride strong and most importantly—ride safely. Sportives attract riders of all skill levels, so be mindful of others, pace yourself and avoid unnecessary risks. Remember, you’re not racing for the Maillot Jaune—keep the rubber side down and have fun!
