When most riders think of South Wales, they picture the iconic trail centres like Afan, Cwmcarn, or BikePark Wales. But for those who prefer their singletrack raw, steep, off the beaten track and importantly ‘free’, South Wales is bursting with lesser-known MTB gold. Here’s a rundown of the best natural and off-piste mountain bike spots in South Wales that offer big fun without the waymarked routes.

It’s worth mentioning that these trails don’t dig themselves and are maintained by passionate locals. You must respect the work these guys and girls put in and where possible, help out on dig days. If you are not familiar with trail maintenance, get out with a group of people who can help.

Smilog Woods – Llantrisant

Type: Steep tech / Enduro

A cult favourite among locals, Smilog is a hidden playground of steep loam, root mazes and creative lines. Built and maintained quietly by the community, it offers a mix of technical descents that will keep even experienced riders on their toes. It rides best in the dry, but if you love a challenge, hit it when it’s greasy. As always ,park respectfully and leave no trace

Garw Valley Trails – Blaengarw

Built by the passionate folks at Garw Valley MTB, this forested area north of Bridgend is packed with hand-cut trails full of tight turns, rock slabs, root webs and more. There’s something here for all skill levels, and it keeps growing.

Barry Sidings Cafe – Pontypridd

Type: Steep natural / Enduro

While the official trails at Barry Sidings offer family-friendly loops, the real action lies in the steep hillside above the cafe. Local riders have sculpted some seriously spicy off-piste lines full of chutes, catch berms and awkward roots. Ideal for those who like their descents a bit wild.

Bonus: Finish your ride with coffee and loaded fries from the Barry Sidings Cafe.

Clydach Gorge – Brynmawr

Type: Off-piste / Tech woods

An under-the-radar spot with short but gnarly trails hidden in a steep gorge. Tight, techy and often greasy – perfect for a quick adrenaline hit.

Respect the space: It’s a delicate area with shared use. Ride responsibly.

Tirpentwys Trails – Near Pontypool

Type: Steep enduro / Freeride

A gritty woodland zone loved by experienced riders for its steep gradients, rock gardens, and gnarly technical descents. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of Ryan Bullimore, who is sadly no longer with us, Tirpentwys has some of the best linked berms in the UK. If railing turns is your thing, you’re going to love it here. With a mix of natural lines and built features, Tirpentwys offers a serious challenge for those who like it rough.

Tirpentwys is not an official trail centre. All maintenance is community led and relies on a donations. If you ride the trails, please donate to help keep them in top shape.
