Nestled in South Wales, just beyond Maesteg in the scenic Llynfi Valley, lies a hidden gem for BMX enthusiasts: The Llynfi BMX racing Club. Boasting a National Standard BMX Race Track, this club is a haven for riders of all ages and skill levels, offering a gateway to the exciting world of BMX racing.

With a mission to make BMX accessible to everyone, the club prides itself on being inclusive and welcoming to riders of all abilities. Whether you’re a beginner eager to learn the ropes or a seasoned rider looking to hone your skills, there’s something for everyone.

So, does it deliver?

My friends had told me about the club so we packed our bags and headed on down on a sunny Sunday morning. One of the club’s key attractions are the informal open sessions, providing members with the opportunity to ride the track at their own pace. For first timers on any sort of pump track, this can be daunting but with a relaxed and positive atmosphere, you’ll quickly gain confidence. For those who want to get into racing, structured coaching and training sessions are available for those looking to take their riding to the next level.

No bike, no problem!

What sets the BMX Racing Club apart is its commitment to providing access to equipment for all riders. For those who don’t have their own gear, BMX race bikes and full-face helmets are available for loan, ensuring that everyone has the chance to experience the thrill of BMX racing in a safe and supportive environment. This is where it gets interesting… getting onto the track is £2, hiring a BMX for the session costs £1.00.  (yes, £1.00!) and full-face helmet hire also costs just £1.00! Kids can ride their own bikes.

Riding in the midst of a cost of living crisis and the bike industry ever inflating the cost of their products, you simply cannot hire and ride for less. Llynfi BMX racing club are sending a clear message of inclusion, whatever your financial background looks like.

Having only ever ridden mountain bikes and virtually no experience riding a BMX, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Bikes Llynfi loan, have a modern long wheelbase geometry which gives them a balanced and natural feeling whilst still being very responsive.

Safety first

Of course, safety is paramount at the club, and riders are reminded that they must be able to ride a bike proficiently to use the track. The whole track is ‘rollable’ meaning there are no gaps that need to be cleared in order to complete the track. If you take your own BMX, it must be in good working order, and pegs are not permitted to ensure the safety of all riders.

Get me there!

Whether you’re a newbie eager to learn or a seasoned rider seeking new challenges, there’s no better place to experience the thrill of BMX  than Llynfi. There is a little tuck shop which offers drinks and sweets-Much needed after a few laps!  So grab your flat shoes and get ready for an unforgettable day of riding.
