When it comes to securing your bike, choosing the right lock is just as important as where and how you use it. There is simply nothing worse than having your claim declined because the wrong lock has been used or the bike isn’t locked up correctly.
We have specific requirements for locks to ensure your bike is properly protected. Let’s get stuck in.
Not all locks are equal
First things first, We require any locks used by our policy holders to be independently tested and rated by Sold Secure. If your lock does not have a Sold Secure rating, we cannot cover your bike! Only locks rated Silver, Gold, or Diamond are accepted under our policies:
Silver: An acceptable level of security for bicycles with a value upto £1500
Gold: A strong deterrent for thieves, Essential for bicycles valued over £1500
Diamond: The highest level of security, offering maximum protection against theft, even in high-crime areas.
What type of lock works best?
Where and how you lock your bike needs to be you main consideration when purchasing a new lock. After all, it’s pointless having a lock you cannot use.
Chain Locks: Offering greater flexibility, chain locks allow you to secure your bike to a wider range of locking points, such as lampposts or railings. A high-quality chain with a strong lock can provide excellent security. Great for locking onto bike racks, around multiple bikes or against wider immovable objects
D-locks: These are highly secure but can be restrictive depending on the locking environment. They work best in areas where you can lock your bike to something like a standard Sheffield bike stand, metal railings or a narrow metal post.
Wearable hybrid locks. A cross between a chain lock and a d Lock. Wearable locks provide maximum security but with a little more flex than a traditional D lock. The extra length of the lock means that you can also remove the front wheel to be butted up against the rear wheel. With this method, your front wheel cannot then be stolen.
The Next Generation of Security:
A game-changer in bike security, Litelok’s latest generation of locks is designed to resist even the most determined attacks. Their new X1 range of locks are angle grinder-proof, making them one of the toughest options available. If you want the ultimate protection, investing in one of these high-tech locks is a great idea.
Anything else I need to know?
Yes, having a lock is all well and good but it’s not uncommon for thieves to take freshly cut lock with them. This is why we need you to be able to prove what lock you owned via a lock receipt.
What we don’t accept
To ensure your bike is properly protected, we do not accept:
- Accessory cables: Be warned, Many approved D locks are sold with an accompanying accessory cable which will not be rated. These lightweight cables are easy to cut and should only be used as a secondary deterrent, not as a primary lock. Although the cable makes locking the bike very convenient due to the cable length and flexibility, they pose no issues for a thief with a hack saw or bolt croppers
- Non-rated locks: If a lock doesn’t have a Sold Secure rating, it won’t be covered under our policies. Simple as that.
